Prime Ruin was born as a cassette label concept in 2013 to showcase the music of lesser known punk and noise artists in the Syracuse, NY area.
This umbrella extended to friends and noise artists who shared the same DIY punk ethos, a melancholic sonic palette, and who once called Syracuse home. PR released strictly cassettes, mostly in jewel cases but with some unique takes on the size and format: silk-screened slip covers, obi strips, vellum overlays and multiple inserts adorned the nearly 50 releases over the years. Edition sizes were limited, sometimes as few as 30 copies, some up to 100 with multiple represses.
While the list of planned releases for ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ bands and projects is almost as long as the catalog itself, the label served well as a snapshot of what was happening in upstate NY. Currently, Prime Ruin as a label is on an indefinite pause. With the original mission accomplished, the name is now better linked with flyer design of late and the continued live events close to the label. Gracious Host (PR’s successor label) carries on the mission of curated physical releases, but with a new approach to design, edition size, and artist selection.
